Williamsburg's Grand Illumination
Williamsburg’s Grand Illumination celebration truly
kicks off the holiday season with classic elegance. Join the people in
the know who spend the first full weekend of December at
Colonial
Williamsburg as the town lights up and the
Christmas spirit is ushered in with candles, decorations and
fireworks.
Historically Grand Illumination is the moment
when all of the candles in the windows were lit simultaneous. This
reflects the English tradition of placing lighted candles in the windows
of homes and public buildings to celebrate a special event.
The beauty of Williamsburg is enhanced through the
events held during the month of December, especially the way the town in
decorated. There’s no light-up Santa or showy tinsel – it’s all natural,
creative designs featuring fir, pine, fruits and accents. Join a
Christmas Decorations Walking Tour or the Annual Christmas Homes
Tour for the full experience.
Events throughout the season continue to delight with
special musical and theatrical programs, education and evening programs.
Holiday breakfasts, teas and meals make the entire experience festive.
Enjoy holiday music as well, including colonial music for children,
caroling and the Williamsburg Symphonia holiday concert.
