Meet the Cook at Our Bed and Breakfast in Williamsburg VA
– Mike Farrell –
“I’m a traveler and foodie. In every country, city or town I visit I meet the people and try their food. Cooking for guests at The Liberty Rose is the next best thing to opening my own restaurant. Who knows, maybe that’s next in my life adventure.”
-Mike Farrell, The Cook. The Liberty Rose
Son of a creative mother, The Liberty Rose’s proprietor, Sandi Thompson, Mike grew up surrounded by color and carpet samples, wallpaper books and fabric swatches. “Our childhood home constantly changed. Walls and floors and colors and textures were always moving and updating, along with something vintage or antique in the process of restoration. When you grow surrounded by curiosity and creation, it rubs off on you.” A designer of home furnishings, Mike’s creations have been seen in magazines and retailers in many countries including the USA. His designs have been called “edgy” and “wildly creative” by trend spotters. He is also an artist known for using unusual things like crayons, vintage game boards, and butterflies instead of paint. “I play with things until they make me laugh”, he says explaining his art.
He’s also fluent in four languages, English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, and is studying Mandarin Chinese. “I like surprising international guests sometimes”. In 2014 he moved here to give his mother a hand with her Bed & Breakfast in Williamsburg VA. Soon he staked claim to the kitchen and began to cook. “I really fell in love with the area and decided to stay a while”, he says. “I’m a traveler and foodie. In every country, city or town I visit I meet the people and try their food. Cooking for guests at The Liberty Rose is the next best thing to opening my own restaurant. Who knows, maybe that’s next in my life adventure.” Mike can be seen every Saturday morning at the Merchant’s Square Farmers Market, chatting with vendors while filling the saddle baskets on his bicycle with local fare before heading back to the kitchen at The Liberty Rose.
