Williamsburg Tours: Walking, Carriage and Ghost
History is all around you in Williamsburg. From the
living museum of Colonial Williamsburg, to the homes in and around the
city, to the buildings of the College of William and Mary (founded in
1693). If you love American history, Williamsburg will love you right
back!
Visitors may enjoy many tours of Williamsburg -- of all different
types -- here in one of America's oldest cities. From historic walking
tours, to tours exploring Williamsburg's ghosts, to horse-drawn carriage
tours, there's a sightseeing expedition for just about anyone.
Walking Tours
Colonial Williamsburg itself has some of the best walking tours
available. Wander around the Colonial- and Revolutionary-era buildings
in tours led by knowledgeable and costumed tour guides.
You'll also want to look into walking tours of Jamestown, Yorktown and
plantations along the James River.
Group tours that are less expensive than private tours also abound in
the area. Ask us to recommend a few of our favorites to you.
Ghost Tours
Williamsburg's history as a Colonial, Revolutionary and Civil War hot
spot have made it a Mecca for ghost lovers. Tours of Williamsburg's
ghostly residents are many. You can walk or ride, go with a group or
hire a private tour guide, tour during the day or by candlelight -- the
choice is yours.
Just some of the ghosts you may encounter on your wanderings: "Irma," a
former live-in manager of the Kings' Arms Tavern who is reported to have
died in her room there in the 1950s. She's said to walk the halls. The
footsteps of "Lady Skipwith" are purported to be heard in the Wyeth
House. Over at the Chownings Tavern, four ghosts are said to haunt the
establishment.
Carriage Tours
Carriage tours of Colonial Williamsburg have been helping visitors get a
feel for this lovely town for decades. Tours in a horse-drawn carriage
are plentiful in and around the Historic Area.
Your children especially will enjoy riding in a carriage or buggy behind
a horse -- this definitely is great-great-great granddad's ride, as no
matter how well-made the carriage is, the ride itself will still feel
bumpy. And quite exotic!
Carriage tours in the Historic Area can be especially enjoyable since
many visitors to Colonial Williamsburg will stop and watch the carriage
go by. You'll definitely have a chance to perfect your parade wave!
Your children -- and other young-at-heart members of your party -- will
get a kick out of being taken about the city if your driver is decked
out in full Colonial costume.
If you're planning your wedding in
Williamsburg, there's nothing quite more romantic than arriving
and/or leaving the church or your wedding reception in a horse-drawn
carriage. You can even arrange to have snow-white horses pull you,
making for quite the fairy-tale wedding tableau.
No matter what kind of tour you wish to enjoy, whether with a large
group or on your own, let us know of the type of tour in which you're
interested and we'll be happy to give suggestions and even help you
arrange reservations.
